Welcome to the Humanities Department at Coombabah State High School. The department offers a range of subjects encompassing those which cover the study of the history, physical environment and organisation of modern society.
Our department is a very active one with a broad content base and a diverse range of learning experiences. Generally speaking, we aim to involve our students in their cultural inheritance and to help them to develop skills which will enhance both their academic careers and their day to day lives. Students are given opportunities to undertake field excursions to enhance their study and participate in national competitions including the Australian Geography Competition and the Asia Wise Competition.
| Year 8 |
Students study one semester each of Studies of Society and Environment(SOSE) - Geography strand and History strand incorporating topics including the local area, rainforests, Australian-made, gold rushes and Middle Ages.

| Year 9 |
Students are provided with a choice of SOSE strands depending on their results from Year 8. Students again have a choice of specialising in either Geography or History at Level 5 outcomes or SOSE at level 3/4.

| Year 10 |
Humanities is an optional subject. Students may continue to study their subject from Year 9.

Year 11 & 12 |
Students may choice from a wide variety of subject choices including Authority and Authority-Registered subjects, as well as stand alone VTE courses.

Japanese / Italian
| Year 8 |
Students study one semester of either Japanese or Italian ideally following on from primary school. Students develop their understanding of how language works and their ability to apply language skills in a range of school and everyday social situations. Topics include friends, food, fashion and sport.

Year 9
|
With the focus on communication, learners engage in listening, speaking, reading and writing in real or lifelike tasks centered on family, pets and leisure activities.

Year 10
|
Students further develop their literacy skills by immersing themselves in the culture of the studied language. Topics include making arrangements, schedules, directions and events.
|
Year 11 & 12 |
Japanese and Italian are authority subjects and are two years in duration. Themes include family and community, recreation, school and post school options and social issues. Category A - English
