Welcome to the Mathematics Department of Coombabah State High School. Maths is a compulsory subject. We provide the full range of courses in this key learning area to prepare our students for post-school life. We give them the opportunity to enhance both their academic careers and day to day lives. Students are free to move between courses to satisfy their needs and abilities.
Years 8 – 9
Students are initially allocated to courses based on information gained from their previous school. They may either study “Extension Mathematics” which is beyond the usual outcome levels as studied in the “Core Mathematics” course. A “Transition” course allows consolidation of skills and preparation for advancement to “Core”, whilst a “Practical” course aims at confidence building to undertake life’s challenges. The “Extension “course is studied in the “Academic Rich Curriculum” class where students work at a more challenging level.
Year 10
The previous courses are offered with students being extended and experiencing work they will encounter in the senior school.
Years 11 – 12
OP Focus: Maths “A,B and C” are offered with “B” and “C” courses providing preparation and meeting pre-requisites for further mathematics related study. “Information Processing Technology” widens the career opportunities in computer technology and related areas.
Career Focus: Prevocational Mathematics provides a more practical approach to the study of Mathematics to build a foundation for those seeking work placements.
