The Drama department has developed greatly over the last twelve months with exciting new work programs and resources in place for current students. Students have opportunities to study Drama, from as early as Year 8. In Year 8 students can choose either to do a year of Performing Arts (one semester of Drama and one semester of Dance) or can choose to do Drama for one semester only with another elective (like Industrial Design and Technology). Students who choose the one year study of Performing Arts, will be provided opportunities to represent Coombabah SHS in events like the Gold Coast Drama Festival and the Secondary School’s Dance’d in the Spotlight Festival The year long Performing Arts class is a unique experience for Year 8 students on the Gold Coast and we encourage students with a keen interest in this area to be a part of this subject. In Year 9 Drama students study Drama for a semester and cover such areas of drama as improvisation, process drama, mask and movement work. In Year 10 Drama, students study the subject for a whole year and explore units such as Realism, Documentary Drama, Shakespeare and Theatre for Young People. Students who choose Senior Drama (OP subject) at Coombabah SHS are provided with a number of opportunities to perform for a live audience. Units explored thoughout the two years include exploring the Elements of Drama, Physical Theatre, Commedia, Realism, Epic Theatre, Mult-media theatre and Auditions/Monologues. Across all Year levels, students studying Drama at Coombabah SHS are provided with opportunities to not only perform for a live audience (invited guests, parents, peers, teachers) are also encouraged and provided opportunities to view live theatre performances by professionals (through varying workshops, excursions).
