Welcome to the Science Department at Coombabah State High School. Our department provides students with opportunities to study Science at a variety of different levels, supported by a group of enthusiastic staff, who aim to develop in students a sense of curiosity. We also strive to impart knowledge and skills to encourage and facilitate enquiry by adopting an investigative approach to learning wherever possible. Studies in Science will develop a knowledge and understanding of humans, the Earth, the Universe, and their relationships with each other. Students will have opportunities to learn how to use science equipment, as well as develop effective communication skills.

Year 8 All students study Science for the whole year, and are introduced to the processes of working scientifically before focussing on essential learnings within the strands of Life & Living, Energy & Change, Earth & Beyond, and Natural & Processed Materials.

Year 9
There are 3 options available to students. Extension Science is most suitable choice for students who have been in the Academic Rich Curriculum (ARC) class in Year 8, and have demonstrated an above average ability in Science and Maths.

Core Science caters for the majority of students who have enjoyed the subject in Year 8, and wish to continue to expand their knowledge and understanding of Science concepts.

Semester Science is a subject offered for one semester and aims to cater for students who may have found Science challenging in Year 8, and who wish to have more time to pursue studies in other areas.

Year 10
Students may study either Extension Science or Core Science. Extension Science aims to provide students with a good preparation for studies in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in Year 11 and 12. Core Science caters for those students who have enjoyed the subject in Year 8 and 9, but don’t wish to study Biology, Chemistry or Physics in Year 11 and 12. A good standard of achievement in Core Science in Year 10 will also provide students with a pathway to studying Multistrand Science in Year 11 and 12.

Year 11 & 12
Students may choose one or more of the following 4 Authority (OP) subjects:

Biology
Chemistry
Physics
Anyone thinking of studying Science at Tertiary level should consider taking at least 2 of these 3 subjects in Year 11 & 12.
and
Multistrand Science

Details about each of these subjects are included in the Senior Course Handbook, which can be obtained from the school administration.
