Humanities and Languages

 
Welcome to the Humanities and Languages Department at Coombabah State High School. The department offers a wide range of subjects encompassing areas of study in history, geography, tourism and languages (Japanese and Italian)
Our department is a very active one with a broad content base and a diverse range of learning experiences. Generally speaking, we aim to involve our students in their cultural inheritance and to help them to develop skills which will enhance both their academic careers and their day to day lives. Students are given opportunities to undertake field excursions to enhance their study and participate in national competitions including the Australian Geography Competition, Australian History Competition and MLTAQ Speech Competition.
HUMANITIES
Year 7 & 8
Students study a full year Humanities course (SSE) based on the Australian Curriculum consisting of one semester each of History and Geography incorporating topics including Medieval Europe, Japan under the Shoguns’, The Spanish conquest of the Americas, Landforms and landscapes and Changing nations. 
Year 9
All students are required to study one semester of History based on the Australian Curriculum incorporating topics of Industrial Revolution, The making of a nation – Australia and World War I.    Students are also able to select to do a second semester of Humanities, either History or Geography to complete a full year.  Topics for Geography are based on the Australian curriculum and include: Biomes and food security and Geographies of interconnections.  The history course covers topics from the ancient and medieval eras incorporating Ancient Aboriginal Australia, Early ancient civilisations and the Mongol expansion.
Year 10
All students are required to study one semester of History based on the Australian Curriculum incorporating topics of World War II, Rights and freedoms and Popular culture (1954 -present).  Students interested in following a pathway to university should also take a second semester of Humanities which can include Geography and Ancient History.  (Refer to student handbook for further details).
Year 11 and 12
Students may choice from a wide variety of subject choices including Authority and Authority-Registered subjects.  (Refer to student handbook for further details).

LANGUAGES
Japanese and Italian
Year 7 & 8
Students study a full year of either Japanese or Italian, ideally following on from primary school. Students develop their understanding of how language works and their ability to apply language skills in a range of school and everyday social situations. Topics include friends, food, fashion and sport.
Year 9
With the focus on communication, learners engage in listening, speaking, reading and writing in real or lifelike tasks centred on family, pets and leisure activities.
Year 10
Students further develop their literacy skills by immersing themselves in the culture of the studied language. Topics include making arrangements, schedules, directions and events.
Year 11 and 12
Japanese and Italian are authority subjects and are two years in duration. Themes include family and community, recreation, school and post school options and social issues.  (Refer to student handbook for further details).
