Welcome to the Science Department at Coombabah State High School. Our department provides students with opportunities to study science at a variety of different levels, supported by a group of enthusiastic staff, who aim to develop in students a sense of curiosity. We also strive to impart knowledge and skills to encourage and facilitate enquiry by adopting an investigative approach to learning wherever possible. Studies in Science will develop a knowledge and understanding of humans, the Earth, the Universe, and their relationships with each other. Students will have opportunities to learn how to use science equipment, as well as develop effective communication skills.

Year 7, 8, 9 & 10

All students study Science for the whole year, and are introduced to the processes of working scientifically before focussing on essential learnings within the strands of Life and Living, Energy and Change, Earth and Beyond, and Natural and Processed Materials.

Core Science caters for the majority of students who enjoy the subject and wish to expand their knowledge and understanding of Science concepts.

ARC Science is most suitable for students that have demonstrated an above average ability in Science and Maths.

Year 10

Students may study either Extension Science or Core Science. Extension Science aims to provide students with a good preparation for studies in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in Year 11 and 12. Core Science caters for those students who have enjoyed the subject in Year 7, 8 and 9, but don’t wish to study Biology, Chemistry or Physics in Year 11 and 12. A high standard of achievement in Core Science in Year 10 will also provide students with a pathway to studying Senior Sciences in Year 11 and 12.

Years 11 and 12

Students may choose one or more of the following 4 Authority (OP) subjects:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Science 21
